Real questions from patients who visited our clinic or reached out before booking.
About the Condition
Very likely, yes. Heaviness, fatigue, and aching in the legs, especially after long periods of standing or sitting, are among the earliest signs of venous insufficiency. The veins are struggling to push blood back up toward the heart, and the pooling causes that dragging sensation. It does not always look dramatic on the surface. You do not need bulging, visible veins to have a problem worth checking. A Doppler ultrasound is the only reliable way to know what is happening inside. If you want to understand the condition better before coming in, this overview of varicose veins and their causes is a good starting point.
Yes. Pain is not a reliable indicator of severity. Some patients with significant venous reflux feel very little, while others with milder veins are quite uncomfortable. Varicose veins tend to worsen over time if left alone. Skin changes, darkening near the ankles, and non-healing wounds are later-stage consequences that are far harder to treat. We have written about the signs that tell you treatment can no longer wait if you want to know where your symptoms sit on that scale.
Spider veins are the fine, web-like red or purple lines that appear close to the skin surface. They are usually cosmetic and rarely cause symptoms. Varicose veins are larger, twisted, and sit deeper. They often signal a problem with the vein valves underneath. Sometimes spider veins are a surface sign of deeper varicose disease, which is why a proper assessment matters before assuming it is just cosmetic. If your spider veins are on your face, that is a slightly different situation and we have a dedicated page on facial spider vein treatment as well.
For most people, the early stages cause discomfort rather than danger. But ignored over years, varicose veins can progress to skin discolouration, thickening of the skin near the ankle, venous ulcers that are very slow to heal, and in some cases a blood clot forming in the vein. None of these are inevitable, but they are real possibilities. We have covered this in more detail in this piece on the health risks of untreated varicose veins if you want to read further.
About the Treatments
The field has moved considerably over the last decade. Open surgery, which used to mean hospitalisation and weeks of recovery, is now rarely necessary. The treatments we offer at Dr. Jathin’s clinic represent what is currently considered best practice globally:
VenaSeal is the newest of the lot. It uses a medical-grade adhesive to seal the diseased vein from inside. No heat, no tumescent anaesthesia injections, no compression stockings required afterwards. Patients walk out within the hour.
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) uses laser energy delivered through a fine catheter placed inside the vein. It has been around long enough to have an excellent long-term track record and is one of the most widely used treatments worldwide.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) works on a similar principle to laser but uses radiofrequency heat instead. Some patients find it slightly more comfortable.
Sclerotherapy remains the standard for smaller varicose veins and spider veins. A solution is injected directly into the vein, causing it to collapse and fade over a few weeks.
The right choice depends on the size, location, and severity of your veins. That is what the Doppler ultrasound assessment is for. You can also read how laser treatment works in more detail or what to expect before your treatment on our blog.
The right treatment depends on the size and location of your veins, the degree of reflux in the underlying vessels, and your overall health. At our clinic, every patient has a Doppler ultrasound first. That tells us exactly what is happening beneath the skin before we recommend anything. There is no standard package here. Two patients with similar-looking veins can end up needing quite different approaches. If you are trying to understand your options before coming in, this guide to varicose vein treatment covers the landscape well.
The procedures are done under local anaesthesia, so you should feel very little during treatment. Some patients describe mild pressure or warmth. Afterwards, there may be some bruising and tenderness along the treated vein for a week or two, which is normal. VenaSeal tends to have the least post-procedure discomfort because it uses no heat and no tumescent injections. We have also put together some recovery tips after laser treatment that patients have found helpful.
VenaSeal is an FDA-approved treatment that uses a small amount of medical adhesive to close the diseased vein from the inside. A fine catheter is placed into the vein, the glue is delivered, and the vein seals shut. No heat, no large needles, no compression stockings required afterwards. Most patients walk out within the hour and go about their day. It is one of the more comfortable options available. You can read the full detail on our VenaSeal treatment page.
For most minimally invasive procedures, recovery is measured in days, not weeks. The majority of patients return to their normal routine within one to two days. There are no stitches, no hospital stay, and no general anaesthesia involved. Traditional vein stripping surgery, which is rarely necessary now, used to require weeks of recovery. That is largely not the case anymore with modern techniques.
The treated vein itself does not reopen. However, new varicose veins can develop in other vessels over time, particularly if the underlying risk factors remain, things like prolonged standing, excess weight, or multiple pregnancies. We do a follow-up Doppler ultrasound after treatment to confirm the result and catch anything early. If you want to understand what keeps veins healthy long-term, these lifestyle changes make a real difference.
Before You Come In
Yes. You can book directly through our online booking page without needing a referral. If you have had any previous scans or medical reports related to your veins, bring those along. Otherwise we start fresh with an assessment at the clinic. We have locations in Andheri West, Bandra West, Malad West, and Juhu, so there is likely one that is convenient for you. If you have questions before booking, you can also reach us through the contact page.
Dr. Jathin will take a detailed history, examine your legs, and in most cases perform a Doppler ultrasound during the same visit. This maps the blood flow through your veins and identifies exactly where the problem is originating. From there, you get a clear picture of what is happening and what your options are. There is no pressure to proceed with treatment on the same day. If you are unsure what to expect or want to prepare some questions in advance, here are five questions worth asking your doctor before any procedure.
It depends on your policy and the severity of your condition. When varicose veins cause significant symptoms and venous reflux is confirmed by Doppler ultrasound, most insurers consider treatment medically necessary. Purely cosmetic cases are typically not covered. Our team can help with the documentation needed to make a claim.
It is rarely too late to treat varicose veins. Even advanced cases with skin changes can be managed. If you are already at the stage of skin breakdown or ulceration, our page on advanced venous ulcer treatment explains what that involves. The treatment may be more involved at a later stage, but the relief is often significant. Most patients tell us they wish they had come in sooner, not because we pushed them to, but because the improvement in their daily comfort was far greater than they expected.
